June 1998 - Beaumont, TX Forestry in Texas faces many challenges as the 21st century approaches - concerns about the long-term timber supply, reforestation of non-industrial lands, the management of Texas National Forests, public awareness of forestry, the need for research and technology, and environmental enhancement. These issues, coupled with the importance of Texas forests to the state's economy (timber is the state's third most valuable agricultural commodity generating $21.8 billion for Texas' economy annually) and their protection of watersheds and wildlife habitats (29 million acres of forest land in Texas), create a need for all interests to come together to develop a comprehensive plan for the future. This Summit Conference focused on bringing together foresters, manufactures, landowners, environmental and natural resource representatives, academia and government representatives to identify the major issues affecting the forestry industry and develop an action plan to address them.
